Ingredients ::
- 5 bags microwave popcorn
- 2 stick of butter or margarine
- 1/2 cup white corn syrup
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
My Mom always made popcorn balls for Halloween. When I make them, it makes me think of her! This is her recipe mostly written the way I have it. I did pull out my candy thermometer and check the temp.
cook together until it tests to soft ball stage-230 degrees (when dropped in cool water and it can be made into a soft ball when it is rolled around in your fingers--if it crackles and breaks it is to hard). It needs to come to a boil but watch it because it will boil over and burn.
First pop 5 bags of popcorn and try to get all the unpopped corn out of the bowl. Lay out some butter cookie sheets to put balls on after formed. After the syrup has gotten to soft ball stage pour it over the popcorn. Stir with a STRONG spoon and after it cools some put butter on your hands and form the balls. Work fast or it will harden into just one big lump of popcorn. If you don't want to make balls you can just sprinkle it out in clumps on the baking sheets.
