Well I'm back to lurking because I am just in a plain old slump. I can't seem to get my exercise back on track. Everything seems to take priority over it and I'm having a hard time getting myself back into a routine. My eating is finally back on track for the most part.

Other than that, I am back at work full-time as of mid-September while still managing the household stuff plus some issues with DS. He is having a really hard year (first year of middle school) and we are really having to stay on top of his situation. DD started kindie this year and loves it. We had her conference and the teacher asked us if she is always to quiet and we burst out laughing. She is such a force to be reckoned with at home, ie. loud, bossy and stubborn. For her to say she is quiet at school really threw us into a tailspin ; ) The teacher did say that she really is a leader in her class and is learning to consider other children's feelings which she says is rare at this age. Hell, I don't think my 42 year old DH has mastered that skill yet, LOL!

That is really about all that is going on. Once I get home from work it is fast forward until the kid's go to bed so I guess that is why I have been crashing on the couch to watch tv instead of exercising. I am seriously considering joining this gym next door to where I work. They have a discount for our company and I could exercise and shower all on my lunch break. It would sure make things easier in the evening!!!

Mellissa, that gym looks awsome! I hope you're able to join.

I've been having a hard time fitting in exercise too.I thought with 2 in school I would have more time to fit in a work out.Boy was I wrong! My DH works 2nd shift. (3pm-11pm) So I stay up and visit with him for a few minutes after he gets home.I have set the alarm clock to get up earlier to exericise but I only get like 5 to 5 1/2 hours of sleep and I need more than that.
By the time DH leaves for work and my 2 year old is taking a nap my kindergarter is home from school.

I know..I need to quit making excuses! lol

I did get back to Curves yesterday. It felt great!
I should get off my butt, put ds in the stroller and go for a walk.
Have a great day ladies!

Jamie

I haven't done a thing since the end of August. School started and it has been hectic ever since. I know I gotta get back at it. Cool weather is starting to set in so I gotta get outdoors. We did (as a family) walked over a mile the other night. I plan to walk again tomorrow morning and try to fit in when I can. NEED to dust off Pilates DVD's. Ugh!! So that is where I am.

I did sign up for WW yesterday. I weighed in and now I am on that journey :grouphug:

In all honestly, I don't post as much because I feel like nobody else takes the time to do so, why should I? I've mentioned it before, it creeps me out a bit to see so many viewing the posts, but really, nobody can take the time to chime in as well? KWIM? Sometimes I feel like cheap entertainment, LOL. So what if you've fallen off the exercise wagon? That doesn't mean you need to disappear from the board. Mention other healthy things you are doing, ask for suggestions, comment on what others are doing, start a poll. Lately, my view is that unless someone has a question that I feel like I can help with, I'm not posting as much. I hope that doesn't sound snarky. I'm in a hurry to get out the door, but at least wanted to respond.

Lisa

Lisa, I had a feeling people might be feeling that way...that's one of the reasons I have been making a point to post at least the workouts. ((HUGS))

Well, I can count on one hand the number of times I've exercised since starting work, so I feel like I don't really have much to offer. But, I still want to be a part of this board, so I still lurk, and I look for little excuses to post something when I can (like my new bike! LOL) I guess I just kinda feel like a "loser" having nothing healthy to contribute, kwim?

I'm glad you're still here & people are lurking!!!! I just don't want to feel like I'm talking to myself so I haven't been posting much other than my exercise posts! Unless someone calls me out (thanks Karen & Allyn!).

Obviously, I'm still here being the exercise queen. I don't lack in motivation so that's not an issue for me! :grouphug:

Let's get the posts goin' again!!

Aw, Lisa. You may be entertainment, but you're not cheap. :grouphug:

And I'm guilty of not posting enough. I do exercise a lot but I feel odd posting a lot of what I do (like race reports) because it seems excessive on this forum. Probably silly. I have this nagging feeling that posting that stuff is bragging and I don't want to be a disincentive to anyone because I'm such a freak (oh wait, it's Jess that's the freak! <_< )......but I don't feel that way when other people post their reports. I love reading them and cheering them on. Okay, I just refuted my own illogical analysis and I'll commit to posting more over here.

So a recap of my recent past and an update on what's coming up for me....

I've run my three marathons this year. One here in Arizona in February, Mayor's Marathon in Alaska in June and Chicago Marathon earlier this month. If you heard any news reports about Chicago, it was nuts. I'd be glad to post my race report from another board over here if anyone is interested.

My general plan is three marathons per year and my sister has me on this crazy plan to run one in every state. Of course, at 3 a year, I'll be in my 50s when I finish, but it's always good to have long term goals, right? But now I just signed up for the Tucson marathon (which will be my third in Arizona, so it will not cross off another state) on December 2. My nutty sister is running it because it's a continuous downhill and really fast course so she wants to give it a try to qualify for the Boston Marathon. She needs a time of 4 hours, I need a time of 3:45 (because I'm in a younger age group). I don't know if it's even realistic for me, as my fastest so far is 4:03. But I'm game to give it a try. And I always have fun when my sister is there and a few of her friends are coming so we always share a hotel room and laugh constantly all weekend. I can think of worse ways to spend a weekend! And it's only a 90 minute drive from home and we have good friends in Tucson, so I think DH and the kids will come down, too. It's fun to have them there cheering me on.

I've also decided to try a triathlon. I need to work on my swimming, so I've checked out a good book on technique and am starting to practice. In the spring there is a series called Splash and Dash that is three races with a short swim then a short run. That will be a good intro for me into a multi-sport, then there are several sprint distance tris within driving distance during the summer.

My three marathons for next year are Austin, TX in February, Twin Cities, MN in October and Las Vegas in December. And if my sister ropes me into something else, I'll probably do that, too!

I have been checking once a day--usually to post my workout for the day. It has been hectic here too, but I am still finding time to workout 3-4 times a week. I have never been a real big poster, but I enjoy the board and miss seeing everyone here. I keep thinking I should start a poll or something to get things moving, but never seem to get to it. So, I guess I am as guilty as everyone else. It is good to see so many people checking in with an update. I hope it keeps up. I will try to do my part from here on out.

Rachel, Your marathon plan sounds amazing! (More amazing because I can't imagine running that far...LOL) TFS! I am glad to see that you'll post more--I love hearing about what you're doing.
I think everyone should post, regardless of their fitness level or "how well" you're doing. We're all here because of a committment to our health...some weeks will be better than others...

What about a poll on Mondays that has us posting our weekly intentions? Like, what one thing we're going to focus on for the week (fitting in exercise, keeping hydrated, better dinner planning, or whatever) and then what we think will be the biggest challenge in meeting this goal? Then we could follow up on Friday and talk about why we did or did not meet our goals?
Just an idea.

Well I'm a yo yoer, so I check in for weeks, then out for weeks . . sigh. I'm trying SOOO hard to make it a lifestyle change this time. 3 years ago I lost 40 lbs and was doing the WP thing, feeling great. fell off wagon for 2 years and gained most of it back. slug city. I'm back down about 20 over the last 6 months. Trying to SLOWLY change my lifestyle instead of going Gung Ho and falling fast. Mostly I've been walking. I swam some over the summer too. And the past 3 weeks or so I've added back in WP dvds to try to get off my plateau.

I had a physical about a month ago and was pleased that my cholesterol and BP are both very good considering I'm not in perfect shape. But my doc was so encouraging and happy with me for doing SOMETHING and for eating mostly right.

My DH and I have tentative hopes to run a half marathon when we turn 40 (2009). for us but also to be good role models for our kids. we'll see if that happens. we used to both be joggers (10 years ago we'd do 3-4 miles after work every day). so nothing half marathon worthy, but still we know we have some of it in us . . . the next 6-9 months will really tell if we are on the right track.

so on that question: where do you all go (rachel) to find marathons? is there a site that lists them? (or in our case, 1/2 marathons) I don't even know where to begin.

That's a great goal, Gretchen. If you could consistently run 3-4 miles, you will definitely be able to work up to a half marathon. Running long distances is just a matter of slowly building up the mileage. I really believe that anyone who can run 3-5 miles has what it takes to build up to much longer distances (provided you can keep injuries at bay, of course). I never would have believed even 5 years ago that I could say one day, "Oh, in 6 weeks I'm going to run a marathon." But I've kept my mileage up at that level for close to three years now and here I am at that point. One way I do that is to ALWAYS have myself registered for another race. It's easy to really let down after you accomplish that initial goal (I've gone through many, many of those cycles in my life!), but if you always have something you're looking ahead to, you're less likely to do that. That's why I already have my next year's fitness calendar already scheduled! LOL!

As for races.....yes, there are many calendars. www.runnersworld.com has nationwide calendars. But you'll have better luck with calendars kept by a local running club for the area where you want to run your race. Here's one for your local area. There may be others as well. I got that one with a basic Google search.

Melissa is also a good source (are you out there?). M - didn't you run a 10K or 1/2 mary in DC? It seems like there was one recently that routes through the Mall. That would be a cool one.

You can get good training plans at that same RunnersWorld link. www.halhigdon.com also has good ones (though his include 5-6 days of running, which is more than I can put in). I use the FIRST training program which only has 3 days of running a week. Some of them are designed for experienced runners who want to get faster, but I think they have some plans to inititally build up mileage. This plan works best for me because it's 3 runs a week then you can do other cross training and work on strength training as well.

Good luck, Gretchen. Let me know if you have any questions. It might be fun for you and DH to run a couple 5-10Ks as you get back into running shape. It's a great way to stay motivated and it's fun. Also gives you a good idea of what to expect of road races before you do the half.

Ummmm..... yeah, Gretchen? This "sign up for a 5K" talk is how Rachel got me hooked. Pretty soon she'll be sending you socks and giving you tips on fuel belts and e-gels and how not to drop your sunglasses in the porta john before a race. She'll get you. Ummmm..... yeah, Gretchen? This "sign up for a 5K" talk is how Rachel got me hooked. Pretty soon she'll be sending you socks and giving you tips on fuel belts and e-gels and how not to drop your sunglasses in the porta john before a race. She'll get you. Winnie will back me up on this. Just thought I'd give you a heads up. :dntknw:

Shhhhhhh.......don't thwart my master plan.

And LOL about the sunglasses. I think about that every time I go into a portajohn now.

Thank you Rachel, this is awesome. I appreciate the time you spent to put that all down! I love the 5 or 10 K suggestion, makes perfect sense.

and Lisa, thanks for the warning as well! :) since I don't wear sunglasses except driving I should be fairly safe . . .
