Hi everyone! My name is Mellissa and I am 32 years old. Long story short, I was always a "solid" child but with biking everywhere and running around 20 acres growing up, I didn't get heavy until I was in high school. After some issues with my mother when I was 14, I started gaining weight and couldn't stop eating to try and sooth the pain. This would be my pattern for the next 16-17 years. Whenever I was feeling down or alone I would eat. By the time I graduated high school in 1991 I weighed 217 pounds and wore a size 18. After high school I started smoking and found a new bad habit to replace my food addiction. I noticed I lost a bit of weight so I was encouraged enough to stop eating. It was days in between meals for me and I lived off of Dr. Pepper and cigarettes. In the meantime I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life. Missouri offered no options for me so when an Army Recruiter called I told him that if I was able to lose enough weight I would join fulltime Army. He helped me continue losing weight and by May 1993 I was down to 136 pounds and ready to join the Army. Of course I hadn't eaten in over a year and a half to get to that weight so as soon as I was in the Army and made to eat, I started gaining weight back. By the time I got out of Basic Training in August 1993 I was weighing about 150 pounds but it was very muscular. I went to Korea for my first duty station and promptly started eating junk again. After being told I couldn't have it for those months I was in Basic and AIT (it was different when *I* chose not to eat it) I was going to eat cheeseburgers, fries, potato chips, ramen noodles, and drink regular soda to my heart's content. However, I had to walk EVERYWHERE in Korea since you weren't allowed a car there. We also had physical training 3 times a week so running was a regular part of my week. So I only gained about 5-10 pounds over the year I was there.

I got to San Antonio, Texas in August 1994 where I was stationed in my version of Heaven. I LOVE Mexican food and San Antonio has THE BEST FOOD on the planet. Plus I had my car again so I could start driving everywhere possible. My 3 times/week exercise could not keep off the pounds I started packing on due to fast food and lack of exercise. My soon-to-be DH was stationed in Killeen, TX so we spent hours a weekend in the car driving back and forth to see each other. By the time I got pregnant with my first child in August 1995, I weighed over 175 pounds. I got out of the Army due to asthma in November 1995 and my DS was born in May 1996. I had gained over 40 pounds so I ended my pregnancy over 215 pounds. It was very depressing and I had no motivation after his birth to take the weight off again. It wasn't until September 1999 that I decided to lose some weight in anticipation of a trip to Puerto Rico for the first time. I did Atkins and lost 30 pounds by the time we left in February 2000 and wearing a size 14 but started gaining it back as soon as we got home. By the time I got pregnant with my DD in August 2001 I was almost 200 pounds again and almost a size 16. Another 40 pound gain and I was at my all-time highest weight in May 2002 when I delivered my DD. It was enormously depressing to me and I didn't think I would ever get motivated to lose the weight. I did nothing serious for over 2 years before finally deciding that it served no purpose to be miserable while eating whatever I wanted so in the spirit of "I would rather be miserable for being food deprived" I started Weight Watchers in October 2004. I recorded my first weight at 230 pounds because I fluctuated between 227-229 pounds for months. I was wearing an extremely tight size 18 and a 40DD bra.

As the weight started slowly coming off, I took an assessment of my body and realized that there was no way I was going to be able to look halfway decent even with an enormous weight loss because my body was so out of whack. My butt was enormous from my pregnancy and my stomach was in ruins from the c-section required for my DD's birth. I was looking around TPP one day and noticed Wendy's signature to the Pilates board. Without even knowing WHAT Pilates was I clicked on the link and found myself reading all about Lauren Sue, Jess, and Winnie's success with Winsor Pilates. So again without even knowing what it was and Lauren Sue's promise that she started Pilates at her heaviest weight, I went to E-bay and ordered Power Scultpting with resistance. It came and I was so excited that I was able to get through it. I had started walking 2 miles a day every day at the end of September and it helped guide me into the Pilates. After just a week or two I started noticing my pants getting looser. I was so encouraged that I ordered Buns and Thighs to target my big butt. By Thanksgiving, I was wearing a size 16. My DH had a heart attack in January 2005 and that was very sobering for me. I realized that since his mortality had just been taken out of his hands I had to make sure that I was as healthy as possible for our kids. I got very serious with my diet and exercise and upped everything. I kicked my walking up to 4 miles a day and ordered more advanced Pilates workouts. By March 2005, I was down to my goal size 14 since that was what I got down to after having 1 child. I figured that was as lofty as I could shoot for since I now had 2 kids and was much older. Little did I know that even when you think you only want to maintain your size that if you keep working out the reality might be much different. By May I was down 55 pounds and at my goal weight of 175. That was the weight I got to after my DS was born and I was thrilled to be there. But something told me I wasn't done so I decided to shoot for Weight Watchers goal of 155 pounds. It had seemed impossible to even think about before but I knew I wasn't quite done. Plus I had gotten into a size 12 in May and that was mind boggling to me. I hadn't even considered that I would get into that size at the same weight that used to mean size 14 for me.

I kept working out all summer and fall and by November 2005, I reached my goal weight of 155 pounds. It was shocking to me since I hadn't weighed that since August 1993 when I was in the best shape of my life after 3 months of intensive physical training for the Army. I had lost 75 pounds and was down from a size 18 to size 8. My back pain was gone from working my stomach muscles and losing my 40DD chest to a manageable 34C. In September 2004 I bought new shirts and they were all XXL from Old Navy and now I am buying Medium shorts and shorts. I can wear size 6's and 8's jeans and slacks depending on the brand.

It is amazing to me when I think about how far I have come. I can't even explain how much it boggles my mind since I thought getting to a size 14 and weight of 175 pounds was asking more than enough. But to lose 20 more pounds and wear a size that I struggled to maintain when I was 20-21 years old and before having 2 kids is fantastic. I have maintained my weight and am focusing on more toning and definition now. Pilates has become a part of my life as much as my cardio workouts and I love it. My newest workout is the Circle workouts and I love them so much. I have always had a ripple on the inside of my thigh even at my lowest weight but thanks to the Circle workout it is disappearing!! That excites me so much ; ) I am also going to the Dominican Republic in a little over a week and I can't wait to show everything off. The last time we were at the beach I was at my heaviest and I spent all my time consciously covering myself. When we got home I destroyed the majority of the few pictures I let be taken of me. This year I will be proudly wearing a two piece bathing suit for the first time in my life. That sums up what Pilates has done for me. Made the impossible possible!!!

I look forward to sharing my week with you all. I am a late night exerciser so you might not see everything until the next day but never fear. I AM exercising and will get it posted ASAP!!!

I just love reading your story & seeing how far you've come!!! Thanks so much for sharing your story, you're such an inspiration!!! I'm so excited for you to go on this trip, you're gonna look so great in your bikini!! Wear it proud & have a fABulous time!!! I can't wait to hear all about it & see some pics! :D

You are very similar to me in the whole size thing. I never dreamed I'd get to a size 8, that was just WAY beyond what I ever thought I could do. I never ever dreamed I'd be buying size 4's, that's for sure! A 14 was always my *normal* size.

I look forward to reading about your week!!! TFS!

Hugs,
Jess

Monday!!!!!!!!

Today started out as a usual Monday in my household. DH was off to work at 5am (no I don't get up with him but I hear him getting ready) and I got DS out the door to school to catch the bus at 8:35am. After the boys were gone I got the house picked up, paid bills since today was payday and then ran to the bank. After we got home I made DD and I lunch. When I got that out of the way I went outside to work in the yard. For the first time I planted tulips after YEARS of wanting them. But I was too lazy to go out in the fall and plant them when they don't bloom until spring. So last fall I finally decided enough was enough and I went out and planted 50 bulbs. I waited all winter for them to come up and they finally are now. I am SO excited but I can't even take a picture of them since the flower beds are all yucky looking from the winter. So DD and I went out today at 1pm and started working in them. I cut back old foliage and plants and raked massive piles of leaves and pulled weeds. We worked for 4 hours and then finally took a break to help DH mow when he got home!!! After DH mowed he went over to the neighbors to chat with them about our upcoming trip with them to the Dominican Republic so I went over too. We wound up staying over there and having hamburger and hot dogs for the kids. I didn't have either but munched on some baked shoe string fries. I am sun burned and SO sore from squatting and bending so much today but managed to get on the treadmill for 3 miles after we got home from the neighbors and did Buns and Thighs from memory while watching "King of Queens" with DH. I have some homework to do now but am going to bed soon as I am beat!!!

Today's final report on meals:

Breakfast-
Light multi-grain english muffin w/1 tbsp. Smart Balance light

Snack-
2 point WW bar

Lunch-
Ham sandwich w/97% fat free shaved ham, Miracle Whip, tomato and mustard
Pretzels

Snack-
Keebler Right Bites Chocolate cookies
2 pt. bar

Dinner-

Snack-
4 reduced fat oreos
Several handfuls of shoe string baked fries

Wow...What a great story Mellissa!! I really enjoyed reading your story and seeing how Pilates has changed your life. I don't know how you find the energy to work out at nights like you do and am always in awe that you do. You're off to a great start this week and I look forward to reading the rest of your week!

By the way, when did you start running? I didn't see it in your intro but I *know* you ran a 10K last year. :)

Thanks so much Jess. I know a lot of people credit Lauren Sue for their being in Pilates and her story gave me the confidence I needed to start Pilates. But your story was the one I most identified with and related to. We are kindred spirits in a lot of ways and I am so happy I have your support. It has helped me so many times and kept me going. I went into this not expecting even 1/4 of the success you have had so it is shocking and thrilling to be so much closer in size to you now :grouphug:

Thanks again for always encouraging me

Thanks Allyn! I really appreciate you reading about my week!! I am soooooooo excited for our trip. We went away for a week 2 years ago and I refused to let myself fully enjoy it since it was the first time I ever left the kids. So this time I am going to take full advantage of being carefree for a week ; ) I can't WAIT!!!!

As for my foods, this week is going to be all about convenience. I am watching my points (WW) closely and don't want to eat heavily. So last night when I burned my grilled chicken for my salad (only realizing after I had put it all over the salad) I had two small bowls of Honey Nut Cheerios, LOL! I have so much to do in the next 6 days that food is the last thing on my mind. I usually eat the same things for breakfast and lunch and dinner is a large salad or frozen dinner.

Hi Winnie! Thanks so much for reading and replying. Pilates really has changed my life in ways I can't even explain. As I mentioned in my enormous intro, I haven't weighed this weight since I was 19 or 20 and that was before 2 kids. Even when I weighed this before and was running every day along with push-ups and sit-ups I wasn't in this good of shape. I am so comfortable in my own skin now and confident in a way I have NEVER been. It is a whole change for me, body and mind.

As for running I started jogging in August and September to start preparing for the half marathon I was going to do at Wal Disney World in January 2006. To keep me motivated to train I signed up for the 10k in DC in honor of Veteran's Day. I trained for about a month and quit smoking in anticipation of that race. It was on November 6, 2005 in DC and went around the Tidal Basin and the East Potomac park. I still can't believe I made the whole thing!!! My official time was 1:1:35. I even blew out my knee during the race but finished. I haven't really been running since then because of my knee and the recurring tendinitis in my left foot but actually started again the night before last. I was late getting on the treadmill so I ran a mile of the three I did on the treadmill that night. Of course that was the night that I had worked outside all day in the flower beds. Needless to say I am still stiff and sore and my thigh muscle of my left leg is still knotted, LOL!

TUESDAY

Well this morning I woke up SO sore from working outside on Monday. You think you are in pretty good shape and then spend 4 hours doing squats and bending over in the yard plus are stubborn enough to think you should still workout. Of course you wake up feeling like you were run over by a large truck but can't find the treadmark proof in your bed ; ) My back ached and was sunburned. My thigh muscle is so sore. But enough complaining!!!

Today will be spent very quietly and slow moving. After DS got off to school I made DD breakfast and then sat down to catch up on my boards and blogs. My back was hurting from the sunburn so it was proven quickly that my computer time would be very limited today. I got DD settled and started doing some homework. Normally I don't do homework during the day because of DD but I have so much to do to work ahead for the week I will be gone that I have to break some rules. After lunch we went outside to sit in the sun for a little while since it was so beautiful and warm. I did some more reading for school and DD played on the playset and ran from bees. I can't believe that bees are the first things out in the spring!!!

The afternoon was very quiet. I got DS and the neighbor's kids off the bus and got them a snack before their dad got home. I made dinner for the family and then started doing homework again. After I got the family to bed at 8:30pm I got on the treadmill and did my usual 4 miles while watching "One Life To Live" on the soap channel. My thigh was so stiff and sore but I did the WP Circle workout and found it really helped stretch out my thigh. I showered and did some more homework. All day I read and still have about 250 pages to read :)

My meals:

Breakfast-
Light multi-grain english muffin w/1 tbsp. Smart Balance light

Lunch-
Ham sandwich w/97% fat free shaved ham, Miracle Whip, tomato and mustard
Pretzels

Snack:
2 point WW bar

Dinner-
Few bites of Grilled Chicken Salad (realized I burned the chicken when I warmed it up)
2 small bowls of Honey Nut Cheerios

Snack-
PopSecret 94% Fat Free Popcorn
1 glass fat free milk

Yard work is some good exercise!!! I'm always sore after raking, mowing, planting, etc. It's fun though because you don't realize what a good workout you're getting!! I guess you fought the *bun battle* with all of that squatting & planting!! :D

I don't know how you eat so light though, I'd be starving all day if I ate that way!! WTG on getting in your workouts even though you were feeling sore. I find that I feel better after I do a good workout to stretch my sore muscles.

Thanks for sharing your week & I am just so excited to hear all about your trip!!!

Jess

WEDNESDAY

Today started out good. Since DS is on Spring Break I got to sleep in a few extra minutes and make up for those extra minutes I stayed up late doing homework on Tuesday night. I knew I couldn't keep both kids in the house all day so after breakfast we ran to Wal-Mart for laundry stuffs (detergent, Downy, bleach, Cascade, and paper towels) and then took the kids to the park. I dressed a little light for the day (terry shorts with a tank top) and sat there reading my school book and getting some good sun. Some of the playgroup moms who were there in packs looked at me like I was kinda nutty since they had pants and windbreakers on but they can't understand that I have to be in a bathing suit in less than a week and need some sun on my pale extremities ; )

Came home for lunch and then spent the afternoon doing more homework while the kids played QUIETLY downstairs on the computer and Playstation. I was very impressed. Didn't do much in the evening but spend time with DH and DD while DS went next door to play with their kids. After the family was in bed, I got in a good workout on the treadmill and did 4 miles in 51 mins. and then did the WP Advanced Body Slimming workout. I used to do that every other day before I got my Circle workouts but haven't been doing them much since then. It felt good to do that one again and noticed it was working my tush a bit more than the Basic Circle workout. Today, DD is complaining of a burning when she goes to the bathroom so we are off to the doctor today!!!

THURSDAY

First off I have to apologize for my not posting these last two days sooner. With DS off on spring break and preparing for our trip I am completely overwhelmed. I knew this week would be chaotic but it seemed to hit whole new levels ; )

Thursday I had to take DD to the doctor so we left the house right after breakfast. After her appointment I called DH to update him and he asked us to lunch since we were right by his job. We went to the mall and did some window shopping while waiting for him (about an hour) and then met him in the food court. I opted for Subway and got a 6 inch ham sub with no cheese. After we left there I took the kids to Blockbuster for the "Chronicles of Narnia" movie since I had to work Thursday night. It keeps them occupied and DH sane. He could NEVER be a stay at home parent, LOL! We came home and I did some homework while sitting outside on the deck and catching some sun before we leave. I showered and got ready for work and left the house about 5:45pm. I work Thursday nights as a Weight Watchers receptionist. We do the weigh-ins and take member's money for the meeting fee and any products they buy. I really love it and hope to continue even when I am employed full-time!!! We got everything cleaned and packed up and left around 8pm. Usually I come right home and get the kids to bed and then work out but as I was pulling in the driveway DH called and asked where I was. I told him and he said he was across the street at our older neighbors house and would I come over please?!?! So I went over there for an hour (they were feeding my kids though I fed them before I left)and by the time I got home and the kids in bed, I was not up to exercising. I dived into reading my homework since I have SO much to do and read for a few hours. All in all, not a bad day eating wise but I felt so guilty for not exercising when we are leaving soon.

FRIDAY

Today was a pretty good day. As with the rest of the week, it was really busy but I got a lot done. After breakfast I took the kids out to run errands. I had to get my hair cut and then we went to Target to get a birthday present for our neighbor who turns 11 this weekend. I picked some things I need for the trip and a new bathing suit on the clearance rack ( :P ) and came home. As I was making lunch for the kids DH got home and is officially on vacation for two weeks. He was SO excited. Me, I am pondering taking up residence in the laundry room, LOL! I got on the treadmill to get in an early workout and wound up doing a 2 mile run (18:28 minutes) and another 2.5 miles walking. It took me 50 mins total. I also did the WP Basic Circle workout which really hit my inner thighs hard after running for 2 miles. I finished working out and showered. When I got out the neighbors were over and we wound up ordering carry-out (subs and pizza). I opted for the ham sub again since I skipped lunch and worked out. We wound up sitting outside for a few hours and then headed for bed. It was nice and relaxing!!!
