(cross post from March board)

God this is so hard to type...

My 15 year old son Drew took an overdose last night. He did it right in front of me so I was able to call 911 immediately and he was able to get help before the drug compromised his cardiovascular system or anything else. That was our one blessing. Witnessing that was the scariest moment of my life.

I went in the ambulance with him to the hospital and then stayed with him for many hours until the ER doctors stressed that I needed to get my rest, too, especially for the sake of the baby. They sent me home around 1:30am. It was so hard to walk away, knowing how much he needed me there, even if it was just to watch him sleep. They gave him the charcoal to bind the pills he took and after that he basically just slept a very deep sleep, the black of the charcoal still coating his teeth and dripping stains all over his face. Thankfully his EKG's all came back fine. I can't remember a time I cried more than last night, except maybe this morning.

This is the first time he's attempted suicide. We have him seeing several therapists and psychiatrists and in group therapies and he currently takes 2 medications (he's been diagnosed bi-polar and impulse control disorder). What more can I do??!?! I so desperately want to help him. Today was supposed to be his last day in day-treatment in the psych ward (9-3). He was put in that program for a week after he was released from his last in-treatment. He would've been able to return for the last week of school tomorrow. Just when we think he's improving he has another set back. I'm so afraid of what could happen next. I feel so lost.

Please pray that last night's overdose did no damage. Please pray that he can find emotional peace soon...I just want him to be happy.

Drew will be in my thoughts and prayers and I will pray that he makes a complete recovery with no permanent damage. You deserve peace and I pray for peace for you and your family.

Lauren Sue, I am so sorry. I think of Drew often and everything you guys are going through. I can't imagine the pain...for any of you. I will keep you all in my prayers. Would it be ok with you if I passed on the prayer request to my women's group? (about 6 ladies...they are total prayer warriors!!!!)

OMG Lauren, you have me in tears reading this. You snf your family will definetly be in my thoughts and prayers. I pray that Drew is alright and that he finds peace somewhere within himself. You poor girl, having to witness that, but as you said, it's a good thing someone was around. Must have been absolutely devastating and scary all at once. Wow, you've been through so much with this lately. Please keep us posted and try to get some rest for you and the baby.

I am so sorry... all my P & PT are with you and Drew and your family... stay STRONG!! my friend's DS went through similar- (he is adopted from birth-and has things that my friend was never told about-very likely fetal alcohol syndrome) has struggled all along--then lost his dad 3 years or so ago, right after losing 3 grandparents... his dad and his' dad's dad to heart attacks- and his mom's parents both to cancer-this all happened in less 18 months... the floor totally fell out from under him, he also attempted suicide... and my friend got him into in-treatment also.... long story short (so you know things WILL get better) he is doing WONDERFULLY now!! he is a happy, loving, caring, well-adjusted young man-is doing well in school, is involved in wrestling, and for the summer is working on their farm...

I am also going through some very very difficult times with my own DS- (16) different than yours-but difficult just the same-- so I completely understand how you feel... lotsa hugs Lauren... take care of yourself and I will pray for you and Drew.... Kari

{{{Lauren Sue}}}, hugs to you! This is the most difficult thing for a momma to watch, an my heart goes out to you all.

I haven't read the rest of the responses, so pardon me if I'm repeating any info.

I have a young bipolar cousin who has gone through a very turbulent childhood/ teenage years. She attempted suicide a couple of times, but like your son, it never had too much of a threat to it. She always made sure that someone was there to 'rescue' her.

I think the teenage years are the most difficult, and the chances of the disease becoming much more controllable. There are great meds, and mental health has come a long way with dealing with it. Don't let them put him on the back burner...

I wonder if the knowledge that he was finishing up with his program scared him? He might have felt that he needed to 'up the ante' in order to get more help. Hopefully he'll continue to get help, as he desperately needs it right now.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. Please take care of yourself, as you don't need an early baby on top of everything else. This is a marathon, not a sprint! You can only do so much, and you need to let the Lord help you with the rest!

Hugs, and take care. :D

Lauren, you have been on my mind today. I wasn't sure why, now I know. It was the nudge I needed to let me know I should come and pray for you and your family. I'm sending up prayers now. I pray that Drew will find some peace. Please try to take care of yourself too in all this. :)
